If your son or daughter is successful at their athletics then they may be eligible for grants or financial assistance.

As in any sport there are costs involved in athletics,
Competition Entry Fees, & associated Transport.
Specalised Coaching costs, & associated Transport.
Equipment, Trainers, Spikes, Starting Blocks, Implements, Clothing.

Here are a number of places you could try for funding support.

Your first port of call must be your local Town, Borough, County or Sports Council - Usually they will help you with the cost of equipment & their awards are usually between £50 & £300.
In Oswestry it is called The Oswestry & District Sports Council. Details available on the Oswestry Borough Council website.
    http://www.oswestrybc.gov.uk

There are also Local or County Schools support councils, who will give awards similar to the above. For the North of Shropshire there is the Shropshire Schools Sports & Athletics Association.
    Mr. Alan Penton,
    SSSAA,
    C/o Sport & Recreation Service,
    Shropshire County Council,
    Column House,
    7 London Road,
    Shrewsbury,
    SY2 6NW.

There are also a number of private benefactors in the area. One of the most supportive is Phil Brown of "I Want Meat" in Willow Street, formally known as Wholesale Meat Sale.

Ron Pickering Memorial Fund - Supports successful athletes, criteria at least county representation, preferably a medal in a AAAs competition or English Schools.
    http://www.rpmf.org.uk/

TASS = Talented Athletes Scholarship Scheme - Supports students in higher or further education in England. Criteria athletes must be approved by UKA who will expect athletes to achieve UKA's "A" grade. This scheme used to fit just below, but has now (2006) been included in, the World Class Talent program.  TASS currently gives awards of about £1,000 to £3,000.
    www.tass.gov.uk

In 2008 the AAA also were offering funding for athletes under the age of 23 years. (not to be confused with the U23 age group) Details

For those at the very top of their sport, where they are representing their country, they could get National or World Class Level Lottery aided support. This could cover specialised training, warm weather camps in the winter, medical analysis & support, and more. The criteria for getting to & staying at this level is very tough. Details from UKA. However you will probably be on the national rankings by this time & they will probably contact you if you get close to their criteria.
