Olympians
-A Parents view.
When
children are first introduced to Olympians, initially it often seems
better for them to come with a friend, until they become more
confident and get to know some of the other children. Most children
enjoy sharing their activities with another child they know, and a
friend can make all the difference in making that initial experience
more enjoyable.
As
they progress, those children who appear to do best at Olympians and
continue in the club the longest, are not, as one would suppose, the
best natural athletes, but rather those whose family support them and
show an interest in their achievements. We find that those whose
parents do support their children, & make an effort to go with
them when they are chosen to represent the club, can surprise you,
both by blossoming as athletes but also by becoming more confident people.
When
children move from Primary school to Secondary School, it can be a
traumatic time. They are moving from being the most senior part of
their primary school, to the most junior part of a much bigger
unknown school. My daughter had been to Olympians since Year 4. When
she hesitantly went to visit the prospective secondary schools, she
found to her surprise, she knew not only children her own age, from
other schools, that she had got to know at Olympians & who were
also visiting these schools, but she also knew some of the older
children that she had met at the club. She felt she had someone older
she could go to if she were to have a problem. This gave her the
confidence to take her move to secondary school in her stride. I know
many other children did not find this move so easy.
As
they get older some children get into groups who get themselves an
unwanted reputation. Mainly this starts as boredom, but can develop
in all sorts of undesirable ways. However those who have grown with
the club, will be fitter than most children. They will find
themselves being chosen to represent their school for various sports
as well as representing the club & competing competitively for
themselves. They will in short have become more able & more
confident busy people with full lives. They will even appreciate
their spare time at home as it becomes less commonplace.
In
short Olympians can do much more for your child than just keep them
fit or make them more athletic. But you need to support them & be
a part of that life, for it to happen.

GCSEs & Athletics
Do brighter
children just enjoy the challenge of Athletics or does Athletics
perhaps help our members to do better in their GCSEs?
The seven Olympian
members who sat their GCSEs this year (2004), Ollie Blake, Luke
Farrow, Matt Finch, Katie Griffiths, Katie Humphries, Emma Thomas,
& Gemma Weetman, between them achieved 75 higher grades (A to C),
mostly at A & A*. Year after year I am surprised by the GCSE
results of our members. My daughter said that continuing her training
during the study & exam period, helped her to "switch
off" & relax.
My theory is that
athletics training improves the heart muscles & blood flow, &
perhaps this improved blood flow to the brain is the answer.
Whatever the
reasons, our congratulations go to them all. Well done.
