Who
needs them!!
Just
about anyone who is trying to run an athletic club or organise an
athletics meeting needs technical officials.
Most
importantly,athletes need to be able to relax as they compete in the
confidence that they have fair and safe conditions for their
competition. If they should break a record, they need to be sure that
it will be ratified because there are sufficient experienced &
qualified officials to certify the performance.
Certainly
we would have no club records without them.

A sense of comradeship amongst officials. We all work to get the job done. |
|
As well as having the opportunity of seeing athletics at close quarters, I meet & have made friends with a large number of very caring & friendly people |
|
I couldn't beat them so I joined them! |
||
|
|
Because others did it for me. It's my turn now. |
Why
do it? |
Particular satisfaction in encouraging youngsters |
|
||
|
Athletics is such a friendly sport - I have made so many friends. |
|
|
The satisfaction of a job well done |
|||
|
|
Satisfaction in helping potential future champions to compete |
Joy or despair shared with athletes. |
|
|||
|
The satisfaction of knowing I am contributing to something I enjoy. |
|
I find officialing relaxing compared to my full-time work. |
|
As a coach & team manager for many years, I find that becoming an official has given me a better understanding of athletics. Also I enjoy standing out in the pouring rain all day!! |
||
|
|
Being involved is far better for peace of mind than sitting "biting your nails" when waiting for offspring to participate. |
|
At the end of a meeting, whatever the weather or the problems you have had, you go home feeling you have achieved something. |
|||
|
The pleasure of doing something different from my usual work |
|
|
We need the points. |

1
Offer your services to your local club & just
do it!
They may operate an athletic helpers scheme where you can help out
with coaching & officiating. Working with experienced officials
you will quickly pick up the rudiments of officiating & you will
find practicing officials very willing to help you & grateful for
your help. with sufficient experience you may become qualified in
this way, but you will need to take an examination to go further.
Gaining practical experience is a good way to start.
2
To become a fully qualified official you will need to take a course
& a simple exam. These are usually held during the winter months
& are organised either by county officials' secretaries or the
Midland Counties AA.
You
can go straight in by this route, but the course & exam are
probably easier if you have some practical experience of the sport to
start with.
Athletics
officials operate in different categories. You can become:-
a
field events official
or
a
track events official
or
a
time keeper
or
a
starter/marksman
