Shropshire Cross Country Championships
The 2009 County Cross Country Championships were held at Lilleshall and, after heavy rain, the conditions of the course were boggy and heavy underfoot. Oswestry Olympians teams were small due to illness and injury but four athletes won individual medals and several were selected to represent Shropshire at the UK Inter-counties Championships to be held in Birmingham in March. Top performance of the day was by Charlie Mooney who had just become eligible to compete in the U13 age group after celebrating his 11th birthday recently. He stepped up to the start line knowing that some of the boys were up to two years older and that the course was double the distance he was used to. Far from being overawed, Charlie stuck with the leading group and finished a magnificent 8th out of a field of 37 runners. His team mates James Morris and Owen Line came 3rd and 32nd respectively to earn themselves a bronze team medal.
There was also a medal for Daisy Tickner who continued her fantastic cross country form in the league to place 2nd in the U15 Girls race, and a silver medal for Ella Walker in the U17 Women's age group.
