NEWS from
Dohar, Quatar (Persian Gulf) - Mathew Jones had his first track race
recording 1min 40seconds for 600 metres.
Oswestry Olympian junior athletes travelled to Bridgnorth to compete
in the Shropshire AA Cross Country Championships.
Although the turn out in the younger age groups was disappointingly
low, club athletes put in some excellent performances over a tough,
undulating course where the distances were further than usual for
some of the age groups.
Selection for the Shropshire team at the Reebok UK Inter
Counties Cross Country Championships at Wollaton Park, Nottingham in
March is based on the results of the county championships.
Four Olympian athletes put in top class performances to win on the
day and become county champions. Under 13 Joe Morris and Under
17 Josh Ogden who had both won their age groups in the recent
Shropshire Young Athletes League series, maintained their winning
form with comfortable victories at Bridgnorth to book their places on
the coach to Nottingham.
Olympians Under 20 duo of Alison Lavender and Olli Blake,
now both studying at Loughborough University, had a triumphant
return to Shropshire with winning performances in the Junior Women
and Junior Men's age groups.
Running alongside the Senior and Veteran athletes Alison finished in
a superb third place overall with Olli fourth overall in the Men's race.
Five other young Olympians had top five finishes to automatically
qualify for Nottingham: Gina Butler - fifth Under 13
Girls, Ella Walker - fourth Under 15 Girls, Ryan Stokes
- second Under 15 Boys, Alex Duncan - fourth Under 15 Boys and Sam
Robson - fourth Junior Men.
Several other Olympian athletes may also be in contention for places
on the Shropshire team at Nottingham after their performances at Bridgnorth.
